A YORK charity which helps underprivileged children around the city has urged the public to get involved with its latest fundraising event.
Off The Hook, which is part of the York Boxing Club, takes on children who have been expelled from school and other schemes, and helps get them gain qualifications at college and higher education. Activities in the scheme include boxing coaching, fitness, and opportunities in music, dance, DIY and health and safety awareness.
It is hoped by achieving qualifications in these areas, the youths involved can better integrate into their communities.
The scheme also encourages bonding between family members, to help them engage with their surroundings.
Russell Harrison-Potts, fundraising manager and trustee of the charity, said: “By strengthening the support young people feel they have from their families, the project contributes towards building their emotional health and wellbeing.
“We encourage people to reach goals and break away from any negative circles, bringing not only valuable accreditations but also a sense of pride, achievement and community spirit which they may not have thought about before.”
The charity is hosting a fundraiser at the Bay Horse pub in Fulford next week, to help raise awareness of the scheme, and to encourage volunteers to get involved.
Prizes up for grabs at the special auction, from 7.30pm on Saturday, September 10, include a week in Tenerife, a two-night break at Reighton Sands, meals at the Honeypot Café, Scarborough, and the Bay Horse, personal training sessions, driving lessons, haircuts and an MOT.
Russell said: “It’s a fundraising event, and people can find out more about the charity or volunteering as well.
“We are also trying to raise awareness of the fact that we are not just about boxing, but education too.”
