AN endangered beetle has found sanctuary at Birk Crag, near Harrogate.
Harrogate and the Isle of White are the only places in the UK where the rare click beetle resides.
It is so called because it makes a loud clicking noise when it jumps. The Invertebrate Conservation Trust wants to hear from anyone who sees the chestnut click beetle, which is orange-brown, about 8mm to 10mm long, with golden hair behind its head, a black tip on its body and feathered antennae like a stag’s antlers. It is usually seen in April and May on exposed rocks, bare ground and at the base of grass tufts, typically on sandy soil in a sheltered, sunny place.
