BUILDING a new waste incinerator in North Yorkshire would be an unnecessary burden on taxpayers, a campaigner has claimed.

Steve Wright, chairman of North Yorkshire Waste Action Group, said the proposed multi-million plant at Allerton quarry and landfill site, near Knaresborough, was likely to be the last new incinerator complex in the UK, as incineration was being phased out by the Government.

He said: “It is already outdated and hugely expensive and we will be stuck with it for 25 years.

“North Yorkshire taxpayers need to be alerted to the huge financial burden we will be taking on to pay for this unnecessary technology.

“With an easily achievable increase in recycling to the level of some other counties, we just won’t need it.”

North Yorkshire county councillor John Clark has called for a public meeting to discuss plans for the incinerator, which City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council say will cut waste bills by £320 million.
