A YORK MP has spoken of the importance of using science and technology in combating the danger of future food shortages.

Julian Sturdy, who wants York to be a centre for excellence in agriculture, made his comments during a debate in Westminster Hall at the Houses of Parliament on biotechnology and food security.

Mr Sturdy said: “The only way to tackle this is through new technology and science, for example, research to improve disease resistance and drought tolerance of staple crops, not only in the UK, but across the world.

“We must not close the door on science and new technology.”

MPs were debating on the possibilities of future food shortages in the UK and their avoidance by the use of biotechnology and other methods.
