York pupils have come up with heaps of ideas to combat climate change.
Two compost bins have been bought by the council of Derwent Schools Federation, the federated Derwent infant and junior school in Osbaldwick Lane.
It is working with school cook Mrs Topping, and the local pub and restaurant, the Derwent Arms, to recycle leftover food, vegetables and garden waste and turn them into compost, thus avoiding the creation of methane. The schools’ plan is part of the Bright Futures Challenge, a scheme devised by City of York Council, Science City York and North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership to promote sustainable development.
The school council has also done a presentation to the school on on how to save electricity. Tips include never leaving the TV on standby, a tap running or a mobile phone charger plugged in.
