COUNCILS across North Yorkshire have turned their back on the Government’s flagship policy for weekly bin collections.
The £250 million proposal, aimed at restoring the service has been heavily criticised over claims local authorities should not have to introduce extra services at the same time as they are making millions of pounds in cuts.
The Department for Communities and Local Government has failed to provide details of any council which has made a full commitment to the scheme and only one Yorkshire and Humber authority – North East Lincolnshire – has shown an interest.
Harrogate Borough Council, which currently has weekly collections, is looking at introducing a fortnightly system.
