I READ with interest the concerns of those affected by the closure of certain roads because of the York Cycling City Races. I’m sure that it benefited some and not others, as does everything. It didn’t affect me.

Last summer, however, something similar did affect me. Unbeknown to me, my village was closed off for a cycle race, resulting in all four roads into the village being closed to accommodate the race.

I was unaware of the race, as it would seem were other motorists. Everyone was out of their cars wondering what on earth could have happened. There were blue flashing lights everywhere and several overhead police helicopters. I guess there must have been a notice up somewhere to advise of such an event, which had been escorted from wherever the start and finish happened to be. The overbearing concern was with the cost to the taxpayer for the policing of the event, and how this could have been better spent.

Surely there are circuits where such racing events could take place so that police resources could be used to actually catch criminals?
