BILL Hanbury said he received a recent Labour leaflet that was “inaccurate as it was ungracious” (Letters, August 12).

The leaflet explains how the Con-Dem coalition increased VAT despite previous promises. It also showed how the two parties have worked together on the council for some time.

Mr Hanbury said “neither the Conservatives nor their Liberal Democrat partners said they would not increase VAT”. This simply is not true. The Lib Dems campaigned against a “Tory VAT Bombshell” before the election. Nick Clegg said on April 12: “We see absolutely no reason to raise VAT”.

David Cameron said on April 23: “We have absolutely no plans to raise VAT”. This is a betrayal. The leaflet Mr Hanbury refers to also thanks people for supporting Labour during the General Election and shows some of the work Labour councillors and candidates have carried out in his local area.

Just because someone does not like the content of a leaflet, it does not mean it is “inaccurate as it was ungracious”.
