YESTERDAY was the 70th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s largest Luftwaffe bombing raid on London. There will have been many forms of recognising this fact in the UK, and that is right and proper.
However, we seem as a nation always to be looking back, and our ignorance about modern Germany is immense.
Ever since the end of the war, Germany has been portrayed as wholly evil, never given any praise or recognition.
Nazi Germany did some terrible things between 1933 and 1945, but so did Japan, Soviet Russia, Italy, Korea, Spain, Portugal and others, but that is hardly ever mentioned.
In 1945, we were victorious and Germany was defeated and wrecked. Yet look at the vast difference now.
Germany is the world’s biggest exporter, Munich is the best city in the world in which to live. Germany is the tops in numerous sports, art, music, buildings, railways, transport, communications, science, chemicals, health care, education, universities, cleanliness, green technology, efficiency, reliability, quality control, ship building, car residual values, holiday companies, standard of living, politeness, hospitality. Germany deserves a totally different press. Go there, see for yourself – das ist wunderbar.
