FIVE years after the European Union ruled that inmates of jails must be allowed to vote, our coalition Government is to allow prisoners to vote, presumably for an MP – or will it eventually apply also to council elections?
For which constituency and who they could vote for is now being considered.
The following points come to mind. There are about three-and-a-half million “ordinary” people, eligible to vote in this country, who have not registered to vote either by design or unaware they should; others will or do not bother to vote.
Government efforts to overcome this anomaly have not yet amounted to much. It would seem if you are jailed and of age, you will be automatically registered and have the chance to vote. How many will do so?
