THE eco-town fears expressed in The Press of November 9 raise a serious point. The Get York Moving campaign stresses the need for more Park&Ride sites, due to, for example, 1,300 homes to be built on the former sugar beet factory and Manor CE School, resulting in the road congestion from the ensuing number of occupants.
This is only one of many plans which are being developed; others include Derwenthorpe, York Central, other smaller residential sites, and the ever-expanding University of York.
Most of the occupants of these developments will be on the move along the existing unchangeable, network of the city roads, apart from the new roads within each of the residential areas. Park&Ride sites are located on the perimeter of the city.
The anticipated thousands of new residents will be within the perimeter and probably will not wish to go out of town to use a park&ride service.
Even with a certain (unknown) percentage of these “on their bike”, bus or walking, congestion will still prevail.
