Well, has this week been a lucky one or what? Not only have we managed to find one property with its own bar – we’ve found two.

After visiting the former Turf Tavern (see front page) we then staggered across another home that is just brilliant for entertaining.

This one comes in the shape of a nice semi-detached at Station Cottages in Flaxton.

We’ll tell you about the house itself in a moment but let’s first cut to the chase… In the gardens of the cottage there is a super stable block which houses a bar and entertaining room along with a purpose-built barbecue patio.

Fantastic! In fact the gardens of this village home are something of a joy. As well as the entertaining room there is a water feature, a pond, lawned garden and summerhouse and paved seating area. And beyond all this is an orchard and vegetable garden. There is also a timber garage with power and light and a workshop.

We were also quite taken with the inside of this house which has highlights including solid wood flooring, a sitting room with feature period fire surround and insets and a kitchen with an original 1863 Victorian range. Both of the bedrooms also boast original fireplaces – so there is plenty of character on show. Not to mention brilliant views across open countryside...

Station Cottage is offered by Hunters who are looking for offers over £200,000. Telephone 01904 491313.

As we said, this has been a good week for interesting properties and while are other featured choices can’t offer a bar they do offer plenty of character… Certainly if it is character and period charm you are looking for then Aldersyde Cottage, on Old Moor Lane, off Tadcaster Road, has just those qualities. The former groomsman’s house, built to serve the grand Aldersyde House, the cottage dates back to the late 1800s. It is a very pretty property to look at with a rosemary tiled roof and tall chimneys. And while it retains many of its period features it has also been modernised to provide contemporary comforts. The kitchen, for instance, is beautifully fitted with Farrow and Ball cabinets, solid reclaimed timber worktops and has exposed ceiling beams.

The living room (beautifully light and airy) has leaded and stained glass windows, a cast iron period fireplace and original stripped panel doors. There are two main bedrooms and a third bedroom/study, along with a house bathroom. A pretty front lawned garden and a rear walled couryard garden, patio and outdoor dining area, along with a garage, completes the package for which Naish are seeking £289,950.Telephone 01904 653564.

Our next unusual property can be found on Wetherby Road at Acomb. At first glance this might seem a pretty straightforward bungalow. But once you step inside it’s a real eye-opener. “Unique”, is how estate agents Coalters describe the home – and they’re not wrong. The living area is highly contemporary, open plan and combines an amazing double height kitchen area and a living area with a range of full length windows and French doors letting in masses of light. Very unusual, very different.

There are three bedrooms and a house bathroom – so plenty more space to enjoy – and the offering is completed by gardens to front and back and off street parking. Coalters are asking for £249,995. Telephone 01904 655222.

And finally, a gem of a terraced home in Hambleton Terrace, off Haxby Road. What makes this one different is a brilliant make over which lifts it very much out of the ordinary in its price bracket. For instance, the sitting room has attractive stripped polished pine flooring, a smart feature fireplace with wooden mantle and marble hearth, the dining room as good quality laminate flooring and there is an excellent modern fitted kitchen. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms and a good sized family bathroom. And then there is the excellent addition of a second floor master bedroom with solid wood flooring, velux windows and running to some 24ftplus (into the eaves). Very nicely turned out house and well worth a view at a guide price of £194,995. Apply to Stephensons, telephone 01904 625533.
