AN international internet shopping company will be looking to hire more than a thousand workers at a job fair in Selby.

Representatives from online superstore Amazon will join more than 30 other companies and employers at the Selby Job Fair on September 21 at Abbey Leisure Centre, with an eye to find seasonal staff to work in the company’s Doncaster warehouse.

The jobs fair has been organised by Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, after he pledged to help unemployed residents get back in to work in the run up to last year’s election.

Mr Adams said: “Amazon are coming to the jobs fair to look for 1,000 staff for seasonal work and are keen to attract people from the Selby district because it is accessible from Doncaster.

“It’s a significant number of jobs. They are seasonal jobs, but they are very welcome. Not only is it a significant amount of people they are looking for, but it is a major name and people who are successful in working there will have a great boost for their CV.”

It is believed that the online retailer will provide transport for employees in the Selby district to get to the Doncaster warehouse, which would not only benefit the environment, but also save workers money.

Earlier this month, figures released by the Office For National Statistics showed the number of people out of work in Selby had gone up by 54 to 1,542 between June and July.

Mr Adams said: “Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in jobless people in the constituency since 1997, and I am pleased that there has been a fall in the last year, but we can’t be complacent because of the frugal nature of the economy. Whilst there is growth, we would like to see that growth be more substantial than it is.”

North Yorkshire County Council, Selby College and City of York Council will also be at the event, There will also be details available on apprenticeships, and seminars held throughout the day about interview techniques and online job searches.
