A STORY involving a shipwreck and a magical journey with a Bengal tiger could spark a fresh interest in reading and literature.

That’s the hope of a York woman who intends to give away 50 free copies of the prize-winning novel The Life Of Pi at an event in York next month.

Chris Woodcock was inspired to take part in the World Book Night initiative, aimed at handing out one million books across the UK and Ireland, and has received 50 copies of The Life Of Pi, one of the 25 titles selected for the project.

Her giveaway is to take place between 7.30pm and 9pm on March 5, World Book Night, at St Paul’s Church, Holgate, York, when wine and “nibbles” will also be available. “It’s a fun, community thing to do,” said Chris. “I got excited by this lovely book, and I would like to get people to read it and see what they think and maybe get into books. I would just like to give the 50 copies away and see what happens.”

The book, by Yann Martel, is divided into three parts, the middle of which involves a shipwreck which leaves the hero, Indian boy Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel, stranded for 227 days on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a tiger named Richard Parker.
