RUSSELL Kane, this summer’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winner, will bring his Fringe hit Smokescreens & Castles to Pocklington Arts Centre on February 24 next year.

Kane, who won the award after four nominations in five years, recalls his childhood home in his new show. As the only council house in his street to be bought privately – by his dad, Dave Kane – it attracted the ire of the neighbours, and when Dave built an extension, their home was mockingly christened “The Castle” by incensed Enfield folk.

In Kane’s show, The Castle could be a symbol for all the funny and heartbreaking stuff that went on in that house: the bricking they put around their love; the barriers they built in place of feelings; the smokescreens in communication which hid the tender truths.

One room at a time, Kane whisks his audience through The Castle, blowing away the smoke of history in a whirlwind of high-energy contortions.

Already in 2010, Kane has toured the country twice, presenting his stand-up show Human Dressage and his new Fakespeare play, The Tragickal Saveings Of King Nigel. This summer, his first musical, the satirical comedy The Great British Country Fete, made its debut at the Bush Theatre, London.

Tickets for his Pocklington gig can be booked on 01759 301547.
