DON’T walk past the window at Banks Music in Lendal, York.

Instead, stay a while to look at the display of rare photographs and music-related items celebrating the 20th century’s greatest opera singer and operatic actress, Maria Callas.

“She had a life of triumph and tragedy, partly due to her love affair with the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis,” says exhibition publicist Peter Hudson.

This touring show has visited Edinburgh, Manchester, Harrogate and now York, where it will run until the end of April, incorporating not only the window photographs but also a display on the first floor.

The exhibition also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Callas’s historic recordings for Callas a Paris, made in the French capital in 1961 with the conductor Georges Pretre.
