RIPON is to have a new cinema after 31 years. In a coup for the North Yorkshire market city, developer Sterne Properties has secured the independent cinema chain Curzon Cinemas on a lease to operate the arts cinema with two 60-seat theatres, restaurant and bar complex at North Street.

Ripon once had three cinemas but the last one, the Palladium in Kirkgate, closed in 1982 after 66 years.

Developer Simon Sterne said the Curzon deal signalled the end of years of appeals by residents for a cinema in the city. The North Square Cinebar is scheduled to open in July with a programme of “the best news releases” and live events.

The Curzon chain at present runs six cinemas in London, including Mayfair and Chelsea, and has opened a new cinema at Knutsford, Cheshire.

Simon Sterne says: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have reached a deal with Curzon who I strongly believe are the best possible company for taking our vision and ideas for the cinema and restaurant on to the next level.”
