THE French films keep on coming at City Screen this summer, this time in a cinematic collaboration between France and Cameroon: the bleak, visceral and moving White Material (15).

Showing on Tuesday only, at 6.15pm, Claire Denis’s beautiful and often brutal allegory about modern-day farming conditions in a French-occupied Africa stars Isabelle Huppert as a plantation owner forced to face up to the growing social unrest beleaguering her business and family.

Returning to Africa, Denis, the revered French director of Beau Travail, crafts a poignant and highly personal rumination on the effects of colonialism.
