SUNDAY afternoon’s charity screening of Lawrence Of Arabia at Reel Cinema, Blossom Street, York, will raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians.
David Lean’s 1962 Oscar-winning film starring Peter O’Toole will be shown at 2.15pm in a rare chance to see it on the big screen.
The continuing crisis in the Palestinian territories has led to a high incidence of burns injuries, for which local hospitals are inadequately equipped. Proceeds from Sunday’s show will help to fund urgently needed medical facilities for the treatment of such burns. Visit map.org.uk/burns for more information.
In Lean’s film, O’Toole plays Colonel T E Lawrence, a young English army officer and scholar, who visited Arabia in 1916 in the middle of the First Word War. Seizing upon the spark of Arab resistance to Turkish rule, his inspired leadership fanned its flames into a revolt that helped sweep the Turkish Empire away.
Nearly 50 years ago, this story was turned by Lean into an epic piece of cinema that combined wide-screen Technicolor cinematography with a sumptuous musical score, leading to seven Academy Awards. Technical issues prevent it from being shown more often in cinemas.
Tickets (£7) can be booked in advance, in person at Reel Cinema, or on line at reelcinemas.co.uk/york
