BOOGIE Nights, The 70s Musical In Concert was an unusual affair with its cast of reality TV stars, soap stars and all stars, The Osmonds.

If you enjoy Saturday nights in front of the soap box, and have a penchant for Seventies’ disco, this show would most likely float your boat. But a musical it was not.

The story was weak at best and came across simply as an excuse to shoehorn as many Seventies’ hits as possible into two and a half hours.

It was based around the love life of Roddy O’Neil and his ambition to make it as a pop star, eventually meeting The Osmonds and living the dream. Despite apparently being a major part of the show, it was lost amid cheap jokes, mild sexism and endless bounding into a medley of floor fillers.

Chico and Shane Richie Junior provided light-hearted entertainment, Chico with his portrayal of a goofy, disco-loving dancer, karate-kicking and flexing into Kung Fu Fighting and Richie’s lead character bantering with the audience throughout.

Gareth Gates played heartthrob Dean, and again the character role was lost among the barrage of hits, which often were unrelated to the storyline. His vocal performances, however were well received, especially when he joined The Osmonds for Puppy Love.

The Osmonds stole the show, performing with finesse and heart. An explosive rendition of Crazy Horses and a string of requests from the audience to sing a cappella proved this concert was largely for their fans, with Boogie Nights firmly in the back seat.
