The live jazz at Lady Anne Middleton’s Hotel, Skeldergate, swings on in fine style tomorrow night with vocalist Beverley Beirne singing rarely heard songs (01904 611570). She has great taste in her choice of backing musicians. Pianist Graham Hearne and Ian Mann (bass) both spent time as lecturers on the Leeds College of Music Jazz Course.
Ex-York drummer Eddie Hick’s international travelling career comes close to home tomorrow night with Gilad Atzmon’s Orient House Ensemble at Wakefield Jazz (01977 680542). The musical focus is the band’s latest CD, Songs Of The Metropolis (World Village), a homage to great cities and towns they have toured in recent years – from Moscow to Buenos Aires, to Scarborough and beyond.
The name of the Chicago Teddy Bears Society Jazz Band is shrouded in mystery, but they are one of the most entertaining traditional jazz bands in the north. On Saturday they will return to Jazz in the Spa, Trustees Hall, High Steet, Boston Spa (01937 842636).
Kennedy’s Café Bar has promoted live music for many years and the Sunday lunchtime attraction is instrumental jazz from 1pm with bass player John Marley, drummer Paul Smith and a variety of guests (01904 620222).
Later on Sunday, vocalist Carol Addy and Finesse will riffle through some classy songs at the Victoria Vaults, Nunnery Lane, at around 4pm (01904656307). Karl Mullen and Jen Low will continue a full day of quality music with their mix of soul, jazz and blues classics at the Waggon and Horses, Lawrence Street, from 7pm (01904 637478).
Sunday’s big finale will be at the National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) in collaboration with J-Night (01904 658338) – see Gig Of The Week.
Also on Sunday night at the Phoenix, the Ian Chalk Quartet will make one of their fortnightly appearances. Ian is also a jazz tutor and in September he is launching the York Jazz Initiative, for the York Music Service, an exciting opportunity for anyone with little or no experience of jazz improvisation. The intention is to run the course for ten weeks, starting at 6pm; details at ianchalk.net The Wednesday night jam session at the Phoenix packs the place out every week. A new Wednesday session is the Keir Hall Jazz Band at Zizzi’s Reataurant, Lendal, York.
Wednesday’s guests at Scarborough Jazz, at the Cask In, Cambridge Terrace, will be the Heavy Horns. Three of the most exciting saxophonists around – Rod Mason, Jim Corry and Stuart McDonald – play the whole range of saxophones, from soprano to the rarely heard bass (01723 560500).
