Guerilla Café Rebels and the Space 109 community arts centre in Walmgate, York are joining forces with artists and volunteers to present 12 hours of live entertainment on May 29 in aid of charity.

This will be the second such fund-raising collaboration: in February, £1,400 was donated to Medecins sans Frontieres in Haiti.

“Children are at the top of our list to help and we feel strongly that what’s happening to families seeking refuge in this country is despicable,” says co-organiser Florencia Clifford. Consequently proceeds will go this time to a refugee charity that campaigns against child detention.

The event will run from 11am to 11pm at Space 109. “We’re still working on the line-up; we’re looking for acoustic musicians, poets and comedians who would like to join in,” says Florencia, who can be contacted on 07966 014962 or 01904 624879.

“Arts and craft activities for children will be available throughout the day, and we’ll have some good bands in the evening, plus a small bar on donation.”

The day’s vegetarian menu will have a Middle Eastern/ North African fusion theme. Organic juices, coffees and teas, brunch and lunch will be for sale and the organisers are hoping to serve warm food in the evening.

“We’ll also be raising funds for a decent PA system and kit for the children/youths at Space 109,” says co-organiser Jo Pullar. “During the years that we’ve been running, a few of the young people have shown great musical promise, and we think it’s time to start a band.”
