Many jazz joints and clubs are taking a summer break, but Jazz In The Spa continues tomorrow night, with the versatile Six in a Bar plus Rosie.

Led by trombonist Mike Lovell, the band includes Willie Entwhistle of the Temperance Seven on reeds, with Rosie Harrison also on reeds and vocals. The Trustees Hall, High Street, Boston Spa is not licensed, so take your own tipple. Thanks to a new deal, jazz punters can stay at Days Inn Hotel, Wetherby, with breakfast for £49. Phone Tim (01937 842544) or Les (01937 842636) for details.

Sunday jazz treats in York begin at 1pm with Sunday lunch at Kennedy’s Cafe Bar, Little Stonegate, and the Trio of Brazilian pianist Zezo Olimpio.

Zezo is studying jazz at the University of York Music Department, running the Big Band and has a busy teaching schedule. He’s bound to be off to pastures new sometime soon, so enjoy his outstanding talents while you can. After Kennedy’s, the Ian Chalk Quartet brings Sunday jazz to a satisfying close at the Phoenix Inn, George Street, York at 8.30pm. There is more jazz at the Phoenix next week with the Wednesday night Jam Session and Thursday night’s monthly date with 5 Pieces of Silver. The jam features James Lancaster (trumpet), Chris Moore (piano), John Marley (bass) and Colin Byrne (drums). The 5 Pieces are featuring music from a different Horace Silver album each month. This month’s Horace Silver choice is the classic Blue Note album from 1960, Horace-Scope. More details on jazz at the re-born city centre pub on 01904 656401.

Scarborough Jazz also runs on Wednesday night and of the many venues hosting the club over its 25 years, the Cask And Sigma pub has proved one of the most sympathetic and helpful. General Cluster is one of the most popular bands at the Cambridge Terrace venue, one-sixth Yorkie (Ian Chalk) and five-sixths Scarborough musicians. They have a great repertoire of compositions by legends such as Oliver Nelson, Billy Strayhorn and Neal Hefti (01723 500570).

Thursday night in York poses a difficult toss-of-the-coin choice, with the 5 Pieces of Silver at the Phoenix running alongside the long-established jazz at the Old White Swan, Goodramgate. Next Thursday will be Mardi Gras Band night.

York drummer Adrian Macintosh moved to London to become a professional jazz musician and Jazz Notes was much impressed in the early 1970s to hear him at a London pub residency backing pianist John Taylor (now a visiting lecturer at the University of York) and vocalist Norma Winstone (now a prominent ECM records artiste and international jazz festival performer). Adrian made the dream gig in 1982 as featured drummer with Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band and has become first shout for many visiting American musicians touring Britain.

Following in Adrian’s footsteps is Eddie Hick, a twenty-something graduate of the Leeds College of Music, snaffled up by saxophonist Gilad Atzmon.

Gilad celebrates the tenth anniversary of his Orient House Ensemble band with an extensive UK tour with Eddie in the drumming driving seat. Starting on September 15, the ensemble has a tour of 40-plus dates through until December. Catch Eddie’s Northern dates at Sheffield (September 17), Newcastle (October 26) and Wakefield Jazz (November 5).
