WHAT’S On can confirm that Wet Wet Wet frontman Marti Pellow will extend his run as Che in Evita into the final week of the present tour, visiting the Grand Opera House in York from June 9 to 14.
Pellow is already heading to two other Yorkshire theatres in the Bill Kenwright and Really Useful Group production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical: Hull New Theatre from April 21 to 26 and Leeds Grand Theatre from May 12 to 17.
Co-directed by Kenwright and Bob Tomson, Evita tells the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, as she rises from humble beginnings to extraordinary wealth, power and iconic status as the “spiritual leader of the nation”.
Pellow plays Che, a character with rather more than a hint of Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara, although no evidence exists that he and Eva Peron ever met. Here they are linked by destiny as Che reflects the voice of the Argentine people by stirring up conflict.
Pellow’s big number will be Oh What A Circus in a Lloyd Webber & Rice show that also features Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night Of A Thousand Stars, You Must Love Me and Another Suitcase In Another Hall Pellow has rejoined Evita after a 2013 arena tour with Wet Wet Wet, the Glasgow band that had 25 Top 40 hits between 1987 and 1997, topped off by the number ones With A Little Help From My Friends, Gooodnight Girl and Love Is All Around pretty much all year round – 15 weeks to be precise – in 1994.
Pellow, who will turn 48 on March 23, has appeared in the West End and elsewhere in such musicals as The Witches Of Eastwick, Chess, Chicago, Blood Brothers and Jekyll & Hyde, The Musical, which brought him to the Leeds Grand in July 2011.
He played an “intimate solo show” at Harrogate International Centre in April 2008 on his Sentimental Me tour, promoting his change of direction to Frank Sinatra/Nelson Riddle-influenced swing on an album of songs for lovers.
This summer, Pellow will return to Wet Wet Wet duty for an open-air concert at York Racecourse on Saturday, July 26.
