THE Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington held its annual Thunder Day at the weekend.
Sunday’s event featured the starting up of the engines of four of its aircraft. The aircraft included the De Havilland Devon twin-prop, which was once used to transport Lord Mountbatten and dates back to 1947.
Also fired up were an Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a First World War biplane, the “mighty hunter”, a Nimrod MR2 XV250 and the Victor V-Force XL231 “Lusty Lindy”.
The event also saw a Sunday roast served in the museum’s Navy, Army and Air Force Institute (NAAFI)-style restaurant. The museum features more than 60 historic aircraft and vehicles, many of them still in working order. It is also home to the Allied Air Forces Memorial.
Ian Richardson, communications manager for the Yorkshire Air Museum, said: “It was a very good day, hundreds of visitors attended and had a very good time.”
