THE official line-up for this year’s York Ukulele Festival has been announced by organisers, with events and workshops throughout the city.
The festival, on June 15, celebrates the tiny four-stringed Hawaiian guitar which has enjoyed a revival, from its George Formby heyday, in recent years thanks to rock legend Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, and comedian Frank Skinner.
Hundreds of people are expected to visit the event, which is being staged by Red Cow Music, of Goodramgate, with support from City of York Council and Visit York.
Shows will be held on the main daytime stage in St Sampson’s Square from 11am, including performances by Clifton Primary School, Ukulele Sunshine Revival, Headlands School and Military Wives.
Ukulele open mic slots will be available at The Habit in Goodramgate between 1pm and 5pm.
The main stage at The Black Swan, in Peasholme Green, will host performances from 7.45pm, including The Grand Old Uke Of York, Alan Yates, and Uketopians, while the satellite stage at the pub will feature performances from Bradford Ukes and Burke and Hair, who perform ukulele music with a twist.
Workshops will also be held at VJ’s Bar in Finkle Street, with beginners welcome between 2.30pm and 3.15pm, and intermediate players welcome between 3.30pm and 4.45pm.
