MORE than 80 York roads which will no longer be treated as a priority for gritting during icy weather have been revealed for the first time.

The list of 81 roads was obtained from City of York Council by Liberal Democrat councillors as the ruling Labour Cabinet decided to press ahead with the cut, along with reductions in salt bins.

Nearly 30 miles of roads losing prioritisation include Melrosegate, Tang Hall Lane, Chaloners Road, Bootham Terrace, Kettlestring Lane, Rawcliffe Drive, Kingsway West, Rawcliffe Bar P&R access and Fulford Cross.

A Liberal Democrat spokesman claimed the change would mean some roads remaining untreated for several days, even after severe winter weather, and said the changes came despite opposition from residents, community groups and local councillors.

He said Lib Dem councillors Ann Reid, Nigel Ayre and Keith Aspden “called-in” the decision for further review but at a special meeting of York’s Corporate and Scrutiny Management committee, Labour used its majority to push through the controversial proposals by five votes to four.

Coun Ann Reid said: “A substantial number of areas will be left without a regular gritting regime, leading to access problems for public transport and to schools in icy weather.” She claimed the Labour Cabinet was prioritising schemes such as buying an Arts Barge over delivering frontline services.

Labour’s cabinet member for environmental services, Coun David Levene, said: “Those roads removed from the primary gritting route will still be treated in severe weather.”

He said a thorough consultation was held online and offline and said changes had been made following feedback.
