Campaigners from York and Ryedale Friends of the Earth gathered in the city-centre to protest about fracking.
The group want a local ban on fracking, the controversial new process of trying to extract shale gas by fracturing bedrock.
Richard Lane, one of the campaigners, said: "Fracking is an environmental disaster. It is no solution to climate change, and it brings with it high risks of pollution – to air and to water courses. We need the council to pledge that it will not allow this to happen here in York."
