PRUNING and planting by some of North Yorkshire's best gardeners has seen the region scoop an array of awards at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
The event, in its 101st year, is basking in the sun as buds bloom for the 157,000 visitors expected to attend the 11acre site over the five days.
This year's judging saw York nursery Primrose Bank, based in Kexby, claim a gold award in the Floral Marquee category . It is the first gold Primrose Bank has won having displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show for seven years.
Sue Goodwill, who runs the nursery and created the garden with partner Terry Marran, said: "It is great to have won a gold, it has been worth the wait. We created a garden of unusual hardy perennials, which were laid out in the form of a garden that people could look at and take a piece away with them if they wanted.
"It has been a great event so far . It has been very hot, and all the plants have flowered just as we wanted them to."
Winning Silver-Gilt Flora was Ripon-based Drointon Nurseries which impressed judges in the Floral Marquee section, while Silver Flora was presented to Oak Tree Nursery, based in Selby.
Bronze Flora awards were presented to the Food & Environment Research Agency, at Sand Hutton, and Thirsk-based Global Stone Paving, which won in the Discovery and Fresh Garden categories respectively.
This year's Welcome to Yorkshire garden, celebrating the county's hosting of the Grand Depart of the Tour de France this summer, scooped a silver medal.
Gary Verity, chief executive, said: ‘‘This is the world's greatest flower show, so to be awarded a silver medal is a proud moment for all the people who have worked on the garden, and it is also great news for Yorkshire people in the year that our county hosts the opening to the world’s greatest annual sporting event.’’
The garden was designed by Alistair W Baldwin Associates, in Bedale, and incorporates a two-sided, rural and urban design, mimicking images of the wild North York Moors alongside images of Yorkshire’s urban cityscapes.
The Welcome to Yorkshire team are now hoping for a fifth consecutive win in the People's Choice Award.
Welcome to Yorkshire's garden featured wildflowers grown by York-based specialist turf firm Lindum.
Lindum, which has supplied wildflowers, green roof planting and turf to RHS Show gardens for more than ten years, also supplied a number of other award-winning gardens.
Sedum Green Roofs from Lindum featured among Gold medal winners “Togenkyo – A Paradise on Earth” designed by Kazuyuki Ishihara and “Time to Reflect -The Homebase Garden”, designed by Adam Frost.
“Togenkyo – A Paradise on Earth” was also awarded Best Artisan Garden.
Stephen Fell, managing director, Lindum, said: “It’s been another successful year for our specialist turf at Chelsea and I’m particularly thrilled to see Sedum Green Roofs featuring among the Gold medal winners.
"Green Roofs have a significant role to play in Greening urban spaces and mitigating climate change, and these gardens showcase just what an amazing feature they can be.”
In addition to “Togenkyo “and “Time to Reflect” Lindum supplied a range of turf to medal winners including Nong Nooch Thailand, designed by Anders Lindstrom, which was awarded gold; Topiary Arts, designed by James Crebbin-Bailey, which won Silver - Gilt; and “75 Years of The Roof Gardens in Kensington”, designed by David Lewis, which won Bronze.

Starting in the Yorkshire Dales and ending at the sea, his garden features Lindum’s Wildflower Meadow Turf.
