AN MP has met Royal Mail staff ahead of their busiest time of year.

Royal Mail delivered 115 million parcels in December, peaking at more than 10 million on the busiest day to homes across the country.

Hugh Bayley, MP for York Central, congratulated staff for the enormous amount of work they do to sort and deliver the Christmas mail.

He said: "We all depend on the Royal Mail at this time of the year.

"Almost everyone in York posts or receives something.

"Millions of items of post are delivered over the Christmas period and the staff work round the clock to make sure our cards and presents are delivered on time.

"I have come to the delivery office to thank the post office staff for the work they do, not just at Christmas, but throughout the year."

The advice from Royal Mail to customers, who want to ensure their mail is delivered in time for Christmas, is to post early.

The recommended last posting dates for UK deliveries are Thursday December, 18 for second-class mail, Saturday December, 20 for first-class and Tuesday, December 23 for special deliveries.
