THE PROMISE of real ale at a York club has won recognition from enthusiasts in the city.
Bishopthorpe Sports and Social Club has been voted 'Club of the year' by the York branch of CAMRA to honour their continued efforts to serve real ale, which includes Black Sheep, John Smith's cask and a regularly changing guest ale which is proving popular with customers.
The club is holding a St Patrick's Beer Festival today, Saturday 21 March, during which the award will be presented.
Roger Bacon, the club steward, said: "On behalf of the club and committee it is an honour to receive this award yet again. This is the third time we have been voted for and it is testimony to the efforts of the staff and our loyal customers. Real ale is definitely more popular than ever, and customers look forward to each guest ale."
The club holds pool nights, music gigs and charity events, and is a valuable community venue.
Chris Tregellis, chairman of York CAMRA, said: "We are used to excellent pubs in York but now some clubs are giving them a run for their money. Well done Bishopthorpe Sports and Social."
