A FLAGSHIP BBC drama captured York in a magical new light when it aired for the first time on Sunday.
Scenes from Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell brought York Minster's statues to life as audiences saw the cathedral's inhabitants as they had never seen them before.
The first episode - watched by millions on BBC One - was filmed largely in the city and began with York's Society of Magicians who widely believe practical magic is a thing of the past.
They laugh in the faces of anyone who says otherwise until Mr Norrell - a reclusive magician - brings the stone figures to life and proves his doubter's wrong.
Filming took place inside the Minster, St William's College and College Street throughout February 2014.
The Minster was cleared of seating to allow the camera crews and actors to cast their spells, and the end result was a hit with those who saw it.
Sharon Atkinson, director of communications at York Minster, said: "We all enjoyed it and were delighted they could use the Minster.
"It was very atmospheric and the way the Minster was portrayed was brilliant."
The seven part drama is based on Susanna Clarke's 2004 novel.
It follows Mr Norrell, played by Eddie Marsan, and Bertie Carvel's Jonathan Strange, as they compete for magical prowess in England.
Kate McMullen, head of Visit York, said: "We’re delighted to finally see this new seven-part adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s acclaimed novel.
"It was thrilling to see the statues of York Minster brought to life and York was mentioned quite a lot throughout the episode.
"It’s brilliant to have such a high profile BBC drama filmed here and we’re confident the drama will help raise the profile of York across the country."
