A HOMEOWNER had a lucky escape when a lamppost was knocked over into their garden.
The lamppost was hit by a reversing number 12 bus which was trying to turn around in Eden Close, Woodthorpe, at about midday on Tuesday, and toppled into the garden of the house.
One local resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I didn't see the bus caught up but obviously it had tried to turn round and reversed into the lamppost. I don't know if any passengers were on it at the time.
"The lamppost collapsed onto the ground into the driveway and missed the house, which was lucky. You think of the height of the lamppost, it would have gone right into the window, so they've been very lucky."
North Yorkshire Police were called to the scene, and Northern Powergrid and City of York Council also attended.
The resident said this was not the first time buses had driven into the road in error, but the first time such serious damage had been done.
