HUNDREDS of schoolchildren from across York have taken part in a day of song.
About 250 children from Lord Deramore's, St Aelred's, Fishergate, Hempland, Heworth, Tadcaster Grammar and Yearsley Grove schools joined the Sing and Sign choir at the University of York for the annual Schools' Choral Festival.
The choirs each brought a song they had rehearsed, and joined together in a version of Lean On Me.
Molly Newton, who organised the event, said the popularity had grown in the last five or six years, with one schools' ranks increased from seven children to 47 in that time.
She said: "This year the maximum number of schools was seven or eight because of the venue size, but next year the York Music Hub have said we can have the Barbican because we had 18 schools who wanted to take part this year and we had to say no. That's the hope. People really want to take part, which is amazing, and we just need to find a way to facilitate that.
"I just want to say thanks to all the children and staff who worked so hard to prepare for the day and the accompanist Buffy Breakwell, who was amazing."
