CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save a pub from being turned into six flats have been given a timely boost from research unearthed by city historians.

York Civic Trust has discovered information which could force pub company Enterprise Inns to look again at plans to convert The Jubilee Inn, in Balfour Street off Leeman Road.

The Trust claims the building was designed by Walter Brierley, a York architect who spent 40 years in the city and was responsible for designing various schools including, Scarcroft School, Poppleton Road School and Fishergate School.

He is also known for his work on buildings including York Central Library, the Purey Cust Nursing Home near York Minster, County Hall in Northallerton, Welburn Hall in Welburn, Malton Grammar School.

Dr David Fraser, chairman of York Civic Trust, which protects the city’s historic assets, revealed the findings in a letter to City of York Council, which is considering a planning application for the pub.

He wrote: “Our own research informs us that the architect of The Jubilee Inn was Walter Brierley, the renowned Yorkshire architect who designed many buildings in York and its surroundings, including Goddards (now the offices of the National Trust) and Scarcroft School.

"The significance of this finding, and the effect of the application on the fabric of the building should be assessed by means of a heritage statement before this application is decided.”

Regulars campaigning to save the pub recently successfully applied to have it recognised as an Asset of Community Value, which gives them a right to try to buy it. They say it has thriving golf, darts and pool teams, is an important community venue, and could succeed even more once the York York Central development begins.
