MUCH-LOVED York actor Martin Barrass is continuing to improve from serious injuries he suffered in a motorbike crash.

Mr Barrass, who appeared in Emmerdale in the 1980s and has been a fixture in York Theatre Royal’s pantomime for decades, spent days in intensive care at Leeds General Infirmary after being airlifted there following an accident earlier this month.

He suffered internal injuries and damage to his pelvis, and was unconscious under deep sedation for several days, but opened his eyes earlier this week and his condition was no longer considered critical.

On Friday, York Theatre Royal said Mr Barrass’ condition had improved further, and he had been moved to another hospital.

Damian Cruden, artistic director of the theatre, said: “Martin is still seriously ill, however he is showing some signs of improvement. He is still in an intensive care ward, but he has been moved from Leeds General Infirmary. At this time we are unable to give any more information on where he is being treated, and we would ask everyone to respect Martin and his family’s privacy.”

Mr Cruden said the theatre had been stunned with messages of support for Mr Barrass and his family, and thanked the public.

He said: “We are more than happy to pass on any messages and cards to Martin’s family that are left at the theatre.

Mr Barrass has also been a regular performer with the Hull Truck Theatre Company, which has also sent over messages of support.

Liz Wilson, chief executive of York Theatre Royal, previously said: “Martin is not only a great actor but part of the theatre family and we can only echo the messages we have received by saying we are thinking of him constantly and hope that he responds well to the treatment and care he is receiving.”
