Engineers, police officers and the fire service were called after an explosion was reported near the junction of Front Street and Green Lane, at around 1.20pm.
An area of the street was cordoned off. No was believed to have been hurt.
Engineers are still working to find out what caused the explosion in the feeder pillar.
No 4 buses were diverted away from the closed Green Lane and stops on Tudor Road were also not served until the emergency works are over.
