EIGHT years after water voles disappeared completely, 100 are to be reintroduced to the Army's only nature reserve in the UK in North Yorkshire.
The water vole population at Foxglove Covert, at Catterick Garrison, was wiped out in 2000 after mink escaped from a farm and devoured the lot.
But 100 voles will be brought back after the mink were eradicated.
The Foxglove Covert nature reserve covers 94 acres of moorland edge next to Cambria Barracks and is operated by the Ministry of Defence and Richmondshire District Council.
The site has a reputation as a rich wildlife habitat.
