ONE of Britain’s political giants is to speak at a York Minster lecture later this month.

Tony Benn, Labour’s longest-serving MP and former party chairman, will address an audience on The Moral Choice In Politics at the city’s next Ebor Lecture, to be held at the cathedral on March 24.

The lectures set topical issues against a moral or faith background, organised by York St John University, York Minster, The Order of Carmelites, the Churches Regional Commission for Yorkshire and the Humber and York Institute for Community Theology, and about 1,100 tickets have already been snapped up for Mr Benn’s talk.

Past speakers have included BBC business editor Robert Peston, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, and Labour MP Clare Short, as well as the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu. The lecture is free and starts at 7pm on March 24, but admission is by ticket only.
