AUTHORITIES are cracking down on housing fraud with the launch of a new scheme this week.

City of York Council and fraud investigators Veritau launched Operation Red Card yesterday to reclaim and reallocate properties which are being misused.

The scheme, which involved radio and poster campaigns, aims to increase reporting of suspected housing fraud. Steve Waddington from the council said the operation could help hundreds of York residents.

He said: “Social rented properties are in relatively short supply in York and there are hundreds of individuals and families who are on the waiting list for a home. Housing fraud stops these people getting the home they deserve.”

Operation Red Card will focus on illegal subletting, residents making false applications and residents who move out of their property without telling their landlord.

The council asked anyone with information concerning housing fraud to phone them in confidence on 01904 552935 or email fraud@york.gov.uk
