A MAJOR healthcare organisation has given its backing to our Community Pride Awards by signing up to be the event’s main sponsor.

The Press is delighted to announce Benenden Healthcare Society, based in Holgate, York, has come on board to make sure York’s unsung heroes are given their moment in the limelight.

The not-for-profit mutual organisation was set up in 1905 by post office clerk, Charles Garland, as a way of supporting his colleagues should they fall sick with tuberculosis.

Today it employs 157 people in York and provides healthcare services to a membership of 940,000 people who work, or have worked, in the public sector or in charities.

Lawrence Christensen, head of communications at Benenden Healthcare Society, said they were extremely proud to be supporting The Press’s and City of York Council’s Community Pride Awards.

He said: “These awards are about the power of the community, which is something Benenden really values.

“Last year we sponsored the Health Service Hero category and it was fascinating to attend the awards ceremony and listen to all the incredible stories of the finalists. This year we had the chance to sponsor the whole event and we jumped at the opportunity to take that on.”

With 13 categories to honour people from all walks of life, the awards aim to recognise the extraordinary achievements of those who have worked tirelessly and selflessly to improve the lives of others in the local community.

They are also a celebration of the individuals who have shown immense bravery in the face of life’s hardships and challenges.

Mr Christensen said: “There are a huge amount of different projects in York as well as individuals doing amazing things in the community, and a lot of this goes under the radar. That’s why it’s so great that The Press puts on these awards so that people can learn about what’s going on.

“These are their awards and we want everyone to get involved by nominating the people they think deserve some recognition for what they do.”

The deadline for entries is Friday, July 23, after which a panel of judges, including representatives from The Press and City of York Council, will draw up a shortlist from your nominations.

Finalists from each category will be invited to a ceremony at York Racecourse in October.
