More than 140 York schoolgirls are pedal ready and raring to go after a three-month Beauty And The Bike project came to an end.

Girls from English Martyrs’ Primary School were the last of 14 groups from primary and secondary schools across the city to benefit from the campaign.

Those taking part enjoyed bike maintenance classes, the chance to design fashionable cycle wear, cycle training, natural beauty sessions and guided bike rides.

The project was funded by Cycling City York, and delivered by its team of cycle trainers in partnership with sustainable transport charity Sustrans.

Vicki Hill, Bike It events officer for Sustrans, said: “Feedback from the girls who have taken part shows that they feel their cycling confidence and skills have increased, and they’re all keen to cycle much more in the future.”

Graham Titchener, programme manager for Cycling City York, said: “The main aim was to break down some of the barriers that prevent young girls from cycling, as well as reminding them that it’s cool, fun and stylish to cycle.”
