KEEN readers will soon be able to take advantage of a new York book group based at the city’s revamped main library.

Starting on Monday, June 28, the group will meet monthly at the newly-refurbished York Explore centre in Museum Street, giving people the chance to talk about the books they enjoy and choose titles to focus on at future meetings.

The city already has about 15 reading groups at its libraries and Explore centres, where residents can register to borrow books free of charge for extended periods of time, with York’s library service also supporting 40 more similar gatherings.

Coun Nigel Ayre, City of York Council’s executive member for leisure, culture and social inclusion, said: “The new Explore centre has been designed as a place where people can come together to enjoy reading, as well as a host of other activities, and so it is an ideal venue for the reading group.”

“Alongside the 20,000 extra books which are now in the library, there are a number of new meeting rooms and a café where visitors can enjoy a hot drink while they discuss their favourite books.”

Meetings will take place once a month on Mondays, from 6.45pm to 7.45pm.
