MORE than three bikes a day were stolen in York last year, according to a new report.
Domestic violence is also on the rise, according to figures to go before councillors today.
Figures produced by the Safer York Partnership revealed the city saw 1,120 cycle thefts in 2009/10 – 106 more than the previous year. Their prediction is that the tally will top 1,200 by next spring.
The findings claim the number of offences is holding back York’s attempts to improve its crime ranking against other similar parts of the UK.
According to iQuanta, which compares police forces, the city sits 11th in its “family” of areas, having improved from 14th.
The number of bike thefts in 2009/10 was still lower than the 1,212 target set at the start of the year. That target has now been sliced to 1,152 for 2010/11, but the latest estimate for this year stands at 1,230.
The Safer York report also revealed North Yorkshire Police dealt with 2,197 incidents of violence in the home in 2009/10, compared with 2,025 the year before, as the tally leapt by eight per cent.
The city also saw 757 incidents of repeat domestic violence during the same period, 61 more than in 2008/09, while there were 13 gun crimes in the city in 2009/10, 11 above the target set for the area of two.
Most of these involved BB or pellet guns and were connected with criminal damage offences.
