TENSION has dropped a level in one household after a mum and daughter successfully graduated from York College together.
Caroline Stott, 51, of Pocklington, said she had found the studying tough, but was spurred on by the commitment of her 20-year-old daughter, Lauren.
Caroline, who works at the Old School House Day Nursery, in Sancton, has studied part-time for four years, earning a degree in educational leadership – children’s workforce.
Lauren, meanwhile, has been awarded a foundation degree in sports therapy and will now complete a top-up year at York St John University. She said: “We have studied alongside each other at home and my dad has had to put up with our stresses and strains, but we have made it through together. “My mum has watched me go through the different stages of my education and it has been great for me to see her come back into education, progress and enjoy studying. She has made new friends and her confidence has grown.”
Lauren’s longer-term goal is to take a masters degree at Exeter University, while Caroline will continue her studies at Hull University, with the aim of becoming a fully qualified Early Years Lead Professional.
She said: “I am so proud of Lauren and what she has achieved. Studying at this level has been tough but having her around, being so committed to her studies, has really helped me and we have spurred each other on, sharing information and being supportive of each other.”
Caroline and Lauren were among nearly 200 students to attend York College’s graduation ceremony at York Theatre Royal yesterday.
It was attended by Baroness Estelle Morris of Yardley, former Secretary of State for Education and Skills.
