FRESH tributes have been paid to a York student who died of a suspected drug overdose.
University of York student James Matthews, 23, has been described as an “absolutely top guy” who always had a special presence. James was found collapsed at home in Seventh Avenue, Tang Hall, on Wednesday, August 4.
A fellow third-year politics, economics and philosophy student, said: “James will be badly missed, his presence in either a club or a seminar room was always something special and whilst he had mixed relationships with both of them, he was an absolutely top guy. He was one of the first PPE students I met after coming to York and I immediately liked him for his unique ‘cockney’ accent, dress sense and swagger. He was a brilliant person through and through and I, like many, am devastated to hear of his death.”
Tim Ngwena, YUSU President, said: “If you knew James and wish to talk to someone, contact your supervisor, or alternatively email the Open Door Team at open-door@york.ac.uk or pop in to see them on campus next to the careers service.”
Since the incident police have arrested two men aged 28 and 36, both from the York area, in connection with Mr Matthews’ death. They have been released on police bail pending further enquires.
An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned earlier this week.
