A CITY centre nightclub has new owners and is in for a complete makeover.

Tru, formerly known as Toffs, in Toft Green used to be owned by Luminar Leisure, which has announced the venue has gone for an undisclosed sum to Tokyo Industries in association with Preston-based entertainment business company Laboratory Project.

The Project’s managing director Tony Rigg is a former operations director of legendary London club the Ministry of Sound as well as a former employee of Luminar, while Tokyo Industries owns clubs and bars across the country and has recently acquired Fibbers, as reported in The Press.

A spokeswoman for Tokyo Industries said Tru would be given a “lavish make-over, new lay out and one of the best sound systems in the UK from Funktion One”.

The club will open in late September with a big launch party while the upstairs room will be ready by October and will become a members’ venue with separate entrance.

Tokyo Industries’ business development director Nigel Holliday said: “I live in York, I’m originally from Pickering and went to university here so I’m well aware there’s a real need for something more than a typical nightclub experience in York.

“People want better drinks selections in today’s clubs; they deserve better sound and some really great DJs and entertainment.”

Mr Holliday said student nights would return on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Saturdays would be home to some of the “world’s biggest dance brands”.

In a statement a spokesman for Luminar Leisure said: “Luminar would like to thank all the staff at Tru for their hard work and commitment and wish them well with Laboratory.

“Luminar is fully committed to York and will continue to provide high quality entertainment at The Gallery nightclub in Clifford Street.”
