THE £6.4 million multi-storey car park at York Hospital is on schedule for completion in April next year.

As our pictures show, the 450-space development is now at an advanced stage since work began at the Wigginton Road site in April.

A spokeswoman for the hospital said: “Work continues on the programme for the construction of the multi storey car park and plans are in place to open this facility to the public in April 2011.

“Once the multi-storey car park is completed, some minor works will be undertaken to the former Red A car park at the main entrance to convert this area to a more permanent parking facility for blue-badge permit holders and to reorganise the drop off and pick-up areas. “The new car park will double the amount of visitor spaces available.”

The completion of the project will bring an end to a long-running saga, as NHS bosses have sought to boost parking space numbers at the busy site, where traffic can often be seen queuing along Wigginton Road as people try to visit the hospital.

The first phase of work on the new car park began almost a year ago, after the project was the victim of a last-minute cancellation at the beginning of 2009 as a result of the recession.
