RAILWAY bosses have released these images to show how staff are battling against the snowy conditions in North Yorkshire to keep trains running.
Network Rail says challenges include snow building up again, almost as quickly as it has been cleared, and difficulties in getting signallers to signal boxes and accessing parts of the network to clear and move points. A spokeswoman said 4x4 vehicles and trains were being used to get staff to work. “We have had staff sleeping in signal boxes and even walking 4 – 6 miles to get to boxes,” she said.
“We have snow ploughs running on the east coast main line and people out clearing points and frozen kit. The vast majority of lines remain open and the snow plough is scheduled to run down the Whitby branch again later today.”
