HANNAH Phillip with four of the items from the Revolutionary Fashion exhibition which has opened at Fairfax House, in York.

The exhibition, inspired by novelist Jane Austen, brings the highly distinctive clothing of Austen’s characters to light.

The show brings together pieces from around the country to help tell the story of Georgian fashion, which saw the introduction of low-cut gowns and close-fitting tailoring.

Ms Phillip, the director of the Georgian town house, said: “It was a tremendously daring time, with clinging fabric leaving little to the imagination and helping to reveal more than they did to conceal.”

On show are full costumes with shoes, fans, headwear and accessories.

Ms Phillip said: “Essentially we are seeing the modern man’s fashion being born. We see many of these designs revisited again and again.”

The exhibition, which also aims to explore the political, economic and technological factors that influenced Georgian fashion, will be open from Saturday until December 31.
